Our next Q&A is with our new Assistant manager at The Yurt, Ashley Cook. Here is his journey to The Yurt…
Ashley, it has been a little while since I last saw you before we started working together. Could you let us know what you have been up too for the past few years?
Well, I studied music in Oxford for two years, which involved performing at the O2 Academy. After this, I landed a Summer temp job doing landscape gardening, before moving on to study engineering where I learnt to weld (I’m not very good at it though). During my studies I got a part-time job at The Falcon, which eventually turned into a full-time job, where I worked my way up the ladder to management.
On a work note what was the best highlight for you working at the Falcon?
Working at the gin festival. It was a lot of fun, everyone was having a great time and the atmosphere was amazing. Overall a great experience.
Obviously, you were at the Falcon for quite some time, so what was the main reason to join the Yurt/Nicholsons team?
When I came to have a look at The Yurt, it wasn’t what I was expecting at all. I was expecting to walk into your typical cafe. I like the vibe The Yurt has – it’s different, unique. Working for Nicholsons allows me to do a lot more outside of work with the sociable hours. I can go out on the weekends again!
Everyone knows we love our music here in the Yurt. Have you had a chance to hear our spring and summer playlist yet? If so, what do you think?
Have I heard them? Maybe once or twice… I now know the words to every song on the playlists.
If you had a dream artist to go and see (past or present) who would you choose and why?
It would have to be Muse. I love their music. Everyone says they are incredible live and from what I have seen from watching videos it shows.
Lastly, where do you see the Yurt in the next year and what aims do you have for it?
Bigger and busier. The amount of people who walk through the door already is incredible. Before I started I had no idea the site existed so to see how busy it can get is crazy. My goal is to make sure that everyone is happy. I want every customer leaving wanting to come back and staff having a good time and enjoying themselves.
